Rolex Datejust

The Datejust is the Rolex most people picture: a date window under the Cyclops lens, a fluted or smooth bezel, and a bracelet that works with a suit or a t-shirt. Our stock runs from vintage 1601s to current 41mm models.

Lady-Datejust

The Lady-Datejust is the smaller Datejust: 26mm on older references like the 69173, 79173 and 179173, and 28mm on current models like the 279173. It has the same date window, Cyclops lens and bezel choices as the larger sizes. If 28mm feels small, the 31mm Datejust (68273, 178271, 278273) sits between the two and is a popular choice too.

The references people ask about

  • 1601 (about 1960 to 1978). The vintage Datejust. 36mm, a fluted white gold bezel, acrylic crystal and an automatic calibre 1560 or 1570. The date has no quick-set, so you wind it round. Original dials are what collectors pay for.
  • 16014 and 16013 (late 1970s to late 1980s). The first with a sapphire crystal and a quick-set date. A good step up from a 1601 for daily wear.
  • 16234 and 16233 (late 1980s to mid 2000s). Calibre 3135, one of the most proven Rolex movements. Plenty around, so condition and papers matter most.
  • 116234 and 116233 (mid 2000s to 2018). Heavier case and solid bracelet links, same 3135 movement.
  • 126234, 126233 and 126200 (2018 onwards). Calibre 3235 with about a 70-hour power reserve. The current model.

Bezels, dials and bracelets

A fluted bezel is white or yellow gold and catches the light. A smooth bezel is quieter. Jubilee bracelets are dressier and Oyster bracelets are sportier. The President bracelet comes on gold models. Popular dials include the Wimbledon (slate grey with green Roman numerals), blue, silver and champagne.

Questions

What's the difference between a Datejust and an Oyster Perpetual?

The Datejust has a date window and the Cyclops lens over it. The Oyster Perpetual shows the time only.

Is a vintage 1601 OK to wear every day?

Yes, with care. It's rated for water, but a 50-year-old watch needs its seals checked before swimming, and it should be serviced every few years.

Can I trade my watch in for a Datejust?

Yes. Bring it into the shop at 22 Russell Place and we'll talk you through it.
